Paintings of Chinatown – Stamps of Singapore 1989.

Singapore issued set of four stamps featuring Paintings of Chinatown. Each stamp featured a street in Chinatown. These stamps were issued on 17 May 1989.

10c – Sago Street- Sago is starch extracted from Sago palm tree and used in Puddings. Since there were Sago factories in the area hence the name. Now Social and entertainment centre of Chinatown.

35c -Pagoda Street – The name related to Sri Mariamman temple. Chinese called it the Coolie depot. Earlier groceries were sold in the day stalls and tailoring and Clothes in the evening. Nowadays it deals with mainly textiles & tailoring.

75c -Trengganu Street -also known as side street .before the settlement of hawkers this street would be buzzing with maidservants and housewives buying vegetables, meat, food and other provisions.

$1 – Temple street – Buntings and Clothes on decorative bamboos would be attraction of this street. Stalls selling Cooked food, daily provisions, Chinaware, cloaks and blacksmith shops lined both sides of the streets.

A Registered FDC mailed from Singapore to Calcutta (Kolkata) is listed.

The State Hermitage Museum is a museum of art and culture in St Petersburg Russia. It is the second-largest art museum in the world ( by Gallery and exhibition space). Empress Catherine the Great acquired an impressive collection of paintings from Berlin merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky. he had assembled this collection for Frederick II of Prussia who refused to purchase it. It was founded in 1764 and every year on 07 Dec, the museum celebrates the anniversary of its founding as Saint Catherine’s Day. Its collection comprises of Three million items. The museum has six buildings in the Complex and five of which are now open to the public- Winter Palace, Small Hermitage, Old Hermitage, New Hermitage and Hermitage theatre. It had 4.2 Million visitors in 2017 and 4.5 Million in 2018.

A set of stamps were issued by Soviet Union (USSR) on 10 Nov 1983  on German Paintings in Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg  Russia. The stamps with embossed labels are listed .

4 Kopeck – Madonna and Child under Apple Tree by Lucas Cranach The Elder. This Painting was created by German Painter Lucas(1472-1553) in Northern Rennaissance Period in 1530.

Berlin was founded in 1237 and became capital of Margraviate of Brandenburg in 1417, later of Brandenburg-Prussia and Kingdom of Prussia. After the Second War, the city was divided into two East Berlin became Capital of Soviet-backed East Germany and West Berlin controlled by Allies backed West Germany. This continued till unification of Germany in 1990 when the Berlin Wall was pulled down in 1989 and in June 1991 resolution was passed in Bundestag -German Parliament to move the Unified German Capital to Berlin. In 1999 offices moved to Berlin from Bonn.

GDR issued a set of postage stamps on 750 years of Berlin on 17 Feb 1987  and also a Postcard. The 10 Pf stamp and stamp design feature Ephraim Palace.

Ephraim Palace is a Rococo style building in Berlin built in 1766 by architect Friedrich Dieterichs.

Markisches Museum – It was founded in 1874 and is located in Mitte Berlin. It houses the history of Berlin along with four other museums in Berlin. This museum is also featured on the Postcard.

The erstwhile Socialist Federal Republic consisted of eight Federated entities – Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia and two autonomous provinces under Serbia – Kosovo & Vojvodina. After the break of Yugoslavia and subsequent ethnic violence in the region and especially in Kosovo from 1991 to 1998 a UN resolution was passed and United Nations Interim Administration in Kosovo(UNMIK) was established on 10 Jun 1999.

Kosovo issued a set of Five stamps on Theme Peace and UNMIK on 15 Mar 2000. A First Day Cover featuring the restoration of postal service in the territory of Kosovo and cancelled by U.nited Nations Interim Administration in Kosovo(UNMIK) is listed.

Spain issued a stamp on 100th Birth Anniversary of  Pablo Ruiz Picasso on 27 Mar 1981. Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was a Spanish Painter, Sculptor, Poet & Playwiter who spent his adult life in France. He is regarded as the most influential artists of the 20th Century.

The 100 Pta stamp features a Painting “Homenaje a Picasso” by Joan Miro (1893-1983 ). Joan Miro was a Spanish Painter and Sculptor born in Barcelona. It is believed that Picasso was a mentor to Joan Miro and they met through their mothers who were friends. Joan Miro painted Star or Homage in 1966 and signed it on the day Picasso died in 1973.
