150th Anniversary of First Australian Coin – Stamps of Australia 2005
The Sydney Mint was established in 1855,it was the first branch of London Royal Mint set up outside Britain and First Branch in Australian Colonies.It was Australia’s first official Coinage mint.The earliest Australian Gold coins known as “Sydney Mint Patterns” struck at Sydney on 23 June 1855,had a unique Australian design. The words “Australia” and “Sydney Mint” appear on the Sovereign,though Australia did not officially exist until 1901.The Sydney mint was closed in 1926.The oldest classically detailed building in Australia the old Sydney mint building was originally a hospital built between 1811-1816.
Australia Post issued two stamps and a Miniature sheet with two stamps to commemorate 150 Years of First Australian gold coin or Sovereign . The stamps on Miniature sheet are embossed.
