Postal Heritage Buildings -Commemorative Postal Stationery of India 2017
India Post released Commemorative Postal Stationery viz Pre Stamped Envelopes,Post Cards and Inland Letter Cards on five Postal Heritage Buildings Patna GPO,Delhi GPO ,Mumbai GPO,Shimla GPO and Kolkata GPO. Date of issue 09 October 2017.
Kolkata GPO – This Building was completed and occupied on 02 October 1868.The site where GPO is located was actually the site of First Fort William.
Shimla GPO – It is located on The Mall road established in 1883 on the site of a house known as “Conny Lodge”.It is one of the oldest Post Office Buildings in India.An excellent example of British Hill architecture.
Delhi GPO – It among those buildings of India Post which have been given heritage status by Archaeological Survey of India and is in close proximity to Red Fort and Chandni Chowk.Opened in 1855 given permanent status in 1865 andstarted functioning from present building in 1885.
Patna GPO – It earlier housed Bankipore Post office and is built in British Gothic architectural style.It Opened in 1917.
Mumbai GPO – Designed by John Begg consulting architect to the Government of India in 1902 and is situated close to Victoria Terminus. The GPO moved into the building in April 1913.It is built on Indo-Saracenic style with solidexterior and well ventilated interiors with Kurla basalt,yellow stone and white stone.The dome fashioned on Bijapur dome has a diameter of 65 feet.
