Stamps on Bicentenary of Sir Mark Cubbon – Commissioner of Mysore  – 1985

Mark Cubbon was born at Maughold ,Isle of Man in 1785.His uncle Colonel Wilks got him cadetship in Indian Army in 1801 and from that time he adopted India,especially the State of Mysore as his second country and spent the rest of his life in its service.

Cubbon served in the Army with distinction and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1826. In 1831 after a rebellion in Mysore two Commissioners were appointed to take over administration and by 1834 he was appointed sole Commissioner of Mysore,a large province in Southern India with an area of approx 27,000 square miles.He served with enthusiasm and diligence for 27 years and services were recognised by his promotion to the rank of Lieutenant General (1852) and awards of C.B (1856) and K.C.B (1859).

Sir mark Cubbon was an efficient administrator upheld the native institutions and natives had belief in him. In 1861 Sir Mark Cubbon resigned due to ill health and died at Suez on his way home to Isle of Man. He is buried in Kirk Maughold Churchyard close to his birthplace.

In Bangalore (now Bengaluru) Cubbon Park was named in his memory and a fine equestrian statue remains an enduring memory.

Isle of Man issued a set of  three stamps on 02 Oct 1985 to commemorate the bicentenary of his birth. The designs on stamps are

12 pence – Kirk Maughhold .Parish Church stands in background

22 Pence – Lieutenant General Sir Mark Cubbon K.C.B Commissioner for the Goverment of the Territories of the Rajah of Mysore.

45 Pence – Statue of Cubbon by Baron Marochetto an outstanding Italian sculptor unveiled in 1866 in erstwhile Mysore.

The First Day cover shows the location of Province of Mysore in the then Map of India.

Cubbon park now has been renamed as Sri Chamarajendra Park and is landmark in the heart of city known for its green parks.

2nd World Hindu Conference -Colombo 2003 -Stamps of Sri Lanka.

2nd World Hindu Conference -Colombo 2003 -Stamps of Sri Lanka

The 2nd  World Hindu Conference was held in Colombo from 2-5 May 2003. Sri Lanka issued a 4.50 Rupees stamp to commemorate the event. The stamp on Hindu theme has “OM” on it.

Children’s Paintings on Slovenia – India Joint Issue of Stamps -2014.

Slovenia Post issued a set of two stamps in collaboration with India Post on 28 Nov 2014. The Joint issued also commemorated the 25th Anniversary of “Convention on the Rights of a Child”

The Designs of Stamps are based of award winning paintings of Children. The 0.34 Euro stamp is based on a painting by MasterRoshan V Anvekar on theme ” A Day with my Grandparents”. The 0.60 Euro stamp is based on a painting by Miss Sara Zivkovic of Slovenia and theme of  painting children performing a local art. Slovenia Post printed 60,000 stamps of each denomination.

A Slovenian First Day Cover with two stamps is listed.

Poets on Iran- India Joint Issue Stamps -Iran 2004

Poets was the theme of Joint issue of Stamps by Islamic Republic of Iran and India in 2004. Islamic Republic of Iran issued two stamps on 16 Aug 2004 featuring Persian Poet Hafez and Indian Poet Kabir.

Hafez (1315-1390)  was born in Shiraz and is known as a Mystic Poet who wrote Ghazals & Irfan. His major work was Divan-e-Hafez.

Kabir- He was a 15th Century Indian mystic poet and saint whose writings influenced Hinduism’s Bhakti movement and his verses are found in Sikhs holy scripture Guru Granth Sahib.His legacy continues through Kabir Panth. His Couplets and Dohas are well known.

A First Day Cover of Islamic Republic of Iran with the two stamps is listed .

Hindu Gods on Thailand stamps -2009

Thailand issued a set of Four stamps on Hindu Gods on 02 Jun 2009. The Gods on stamps are

Ganesha -Lord Of Success

Brahma -Lord of Creation

Narayana – Lord of Protection

Siva -Lord of Destruction.

All four are Five Baht denomination stamps designed by Mrs Veena Chantanatat. The Cancellation is also on “OM”.  A really remarkable set of stamps on Indian Theme. The First Day Cover design also shows a Coonch.

The Marwari Sewa Samiti  Nepal was stablished by Marwari Community as a Social organisation on the sacred day of Basant Panchami in 2010 Bikram Samvat ( 1953 AD).It is carrying out social,charitable works besides organising service camps for poor during Mahasivratri at Pashupati Temple.

Nepal recognised the services of this organisation and issued a  Five Rupees stamp to mark the Golden Jubilee of Marwadi Sewa Samiti on Apr 9,2004.

Designed by M N Rana this stamp has been printed by offset Lithography in four colors by Austrian Government Printing Press ,Vienna,Austria and depicts the logo and image of social activities of Samiti. There are 50 stamps in each sheet and one million stamps have been printed.
