This gate was built on orders of Prussian King Frederick William II between 1788 and 1791 and designed by Carl Gotthard. the gate consists of twelve Doric columns, six on each side, forming five passageways. Atop the gate is a Quadriga, a chariot drawn by four horses and Goddess of Victory Victoria with Prussian eagle and Iron cross on her lance with a wreath of oak leaves. It survived the WW II but was badly damaged and then restored. It was closed from 1961 when the Berlin wall was built and reopened on 22 Dec 1989 when Helmut Kohl walked across to be greeted by Hans Modrow.

The Gate has been host to many rallies and talks and events. US Presidents from John F Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and Barrack Obama have addressed rallies here.
