Stamp on Martin Waldseemuller Map – Germany – 2007.

Germany has issued a stamp of  220c to mark 500th  Anniversary of Martin Waldseemuller Map. The Waldseemuller Map or Universalis Cosmographia or Universal Cosmography is a printed wall map of the World by German Cartographer Martin Waldseemuller, originally published on April 1507. It is known as the first map to use the word America. It was bestowed in honour of Italian Americo Vespucci. America placed on this map is now South America.

The wall map consists of 12 sections printed from woodcuts. Each section is one of four horizontally and three vertically when assembled. The stamp shows these 12 sections. The only copy of this Map is displayed in Library of Congress Washington DC. A thousand copies were printed originally.

Martin Waldseemuller (1470-1520) was a German Cartographer who along with Matthias Ringmann is credited with first using the word America on maps based on Vespucci and Columbus travels

Kansas State Flag –  The First State flag of Iowa was adopted in 1927. The Flag features the State Seal on a field of blue. Above the seal is the state crest the Sunflower- State flag of Kansas. It is resting on a twisted blue and gold bar that represents the Louisiana purchase. Below the seal, KANSAS in capitals is written in yellow. In the sky are thirty-four stars (Kansas was 34th state).

Iowa State Flag –  The First State flag of Iowa was adopted in 1917. The design was selected by Daughters of the American Revolution.

The Flag consists of three vertical stripes- the blue stripe stands for loyalty, justice & truth. the white stripe for purity and a red stripe for courage. On the white centre an eagle carries a streamer with the state motto”Our Liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain”. The name “IOWA” in red is below the streamers.

Indiana State Flag –  The First State flag of Illinois was adopted in 1917 as part of Centennial celebrations. The winning design by Paul Hadley of Mooresville Indiana was selected during a competition sponsored by Daughters of the American Revolution.

The Blue & Gold Flag features a torch which symbolises Liberty & enlightenment, the rays represent far-reaching influence. Thirteen stars in the outer circle represent the original thirteen states, five stars in inner semi-circle represent the next five states to join the Union. The 19th and the large star over the torch represent Indiana joining as 19th state in 1816.
