Siege of Szigetvar- 450th Anniversary – Miniature Sheet Croatia 2016

The Siege of Szigetvar or Battle of  Szigeth was the siege of Fortress Szigetvar, Kingdom of Hungary that blocked Suleiman’s line of advance towards Vienna in 1566 AD. It was fought from 06 Aug 1566 to 08 Sep 1566 between the invading forces of Ottoman Army led by Sultan Suleiman and Forces of Habsburg Monarchy under the leadership of Nikola Subic Zrinski former Ban of Croatia. The Ottoman Turks forces won the battle but both the Commanders died during battle -Suleiman in his tent due to natural causes and Nikola on last day of Battle. This heavy loss though prevented the Ottoman advance towards Vienna till Battle of Vienna in 1683.

Croatia issued a miniature sheet on 05 Sept 2016 as a Joint issue with Hungary to mark the 450th Anniversary of Siege of SZigetvar.One of stamp 6.50k features Nikola SubicZrinski and another stamp features Coat of Arms of the town of  Siget (4.50 k)

Stamp on General K S Thimayya DSO – Cyprus 1966

General K S Thimayya ,DSO was a distinguished soldier of Indian Army. He was born on 30 Mar 1906 at Madekeri,Coorg,Mysore (Karnataka) and died on 17 Dec 1965. He was Chief of Army Staff ,Indian Army from 08 May 1957 to 07 May 1961 in the period leading to India China conflict of 1962. He was only Indian to command an Infantry Brigade during World War II and after Korean War headed a UNO unit dealing with repatriation of Prisoners of War. After retirement from Indian Army he was appointed as Commander of United Nation Peace Keeping Force in Cyprus from July 1964 to 17 Dec 1965.

A Graduate of Prince of Wales Royal Indian Military College ,he was one of the six cadets selected to undergo training at Royal Military College Sandhurst. He was commissioned in Indian Army on 04 Feb 1926 alongwith P N Thapar who later succeeded him as Chief of Army Staff. He joined 4th Battalion of 19th Hyderabad Regiment (Now Kumaon Regiment).He attended Staff College at Quetta (now in Pakistan) in 1942 ,where he and his wife had earned praise for their selfless service during 1935 Quetta Earthquake.

During the Burma Campaign he was Commanding 8/19th Hyderabad Regiment and was awarded the DSO (Distinguished Service Order) and Mention -in Despatches. He commanded 268th Indian Infantry Brigade in Japan after WWII to deal with Japanese surrender. After Independence saw action with 19 Division in J&K conflict of 1947 and Battle of Zojila. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1954.

Cyprus issued a stamp in his honour on 06 Jun 1966 (6.6.66). The date is a Palindrome date and a FDC on a distinguished Soldier is listed.

Russia issued a Minisheet of four stamps on the theme of History of Aviation and aerial ramming. These stamps featured Pilots of World War II who were awarded Heroes of USSR medals. The Pilots were awarded Hero of Soviet Union award. This award was the highest distinction in the Soviet Union for historic feats in service to the Soviet state and society .It is no longer awarded now.

The First Contingent Sails from Albany – 01 Nov 1914 – Postage Paid Envelopes -Australia

At the onset of  WW I recruitment for 20,000 Soldiers began in Australia. The Australian Imperial Force (AIF) was convened to assemble at Albany Western Australia where they were joined by New Zealand Contingent. After a delay the convoy of Australian and New Zealand troop ships finally departed Albany on 01 Nov 1914 for taking part in WWI.

A Postage Paid Pre Stamped envelope was issued by Australia in 2014 to commemorate the Centenary of this historic event. The Painting First Convoy at Sea of 1920 is an oil on canvas work of Charles Bryant which is used on cover and stamp design.

This painting of a convoy of thirty eight troop ships escorted by four Naval ships with the British cruiser HMS ‘Minotaur” in foreground leading the convoy.This ship is followed by SS Orvieto carrying Bridges and AIF Headquarters staff.The other naval escort ships were RAN light cruisers and Japanese cruiser Ibuki” Two pictures were painted by Charles Bryant (1883-1937) of First Convoy -one  at sea and other leaving Albany. Bryant was a marine painter.

HMAS AE2 was one of the two E-class submarines commissioned by Royal Australian Navy in Feb 1914. After its role in capture of German New Guinea ,AE2 was assigned to Dardanelles campaign. In Mar 1915 at Galipoli it was first submarine to enter Sea of Marmara on 25 April 1915. It disrupted the Turkish re-supply by sea but was torpedoed .

In 1914 the Government of Canada raised the 22nd (French-Canadian) Battalion,the only Francophone unit to fight the First World War .King George V honoured it with title Royal.

In WWII the Royal 22nd Regiment distinguished itself in Sicily,Italy,The Netherlands and northern Germany. It also served in Korean War ,Afghanistan and Many UN andNato Missions.

A pre stamped envelope was issued on 19 Oct 2013 to mark Centenary of WW I and Centenary of The Royal 22nd Regiment.

2014 marked centenary of beginning of WW I and 2018 marks end of WW I
