The erstwhile Socialist Federal Republic consisted of eight Federated entities – Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia and two autonomous provinces under Serbia – Kosovo & Vojvodina. After the break of Yugoslavia and subsequent ethnic violence in the region and especially in Kosovo from 1991 to 1998 a UN resolution was passed and United Nations Interim Administration in Kosovo(UNMIK) was established on 10 Jun 1999.

Once known for Coal mines and Steel Industry, it is now known as Bio-medical Technology, Microsystems technology and a Digital City.
