Communal Harmony Stamp – Special Covers on Tamil Poets -Sangampex – 96
A Special Cover on Tamil Poets was issued during SANGAMPEX-96 on 19 May 1996. The Stamp used on the cover was the Rupees Two Communal Harmony Campaign Stamp ( Issue date 19 Nov 1995). The Poets featured on the Cover were
Pavalar ( 1874-1950) – Sheikh Thambi Pavalar was a Tamil Poet ,Freedom Fighter & Scholar.In 1859 edited two Tamil Magazines being published from Chennai. A Commemorative postage stamps was also issued in his honour on 31 Dec 2008.
Kavimani -(1876-1954) – Kavimani Desigavinayagam Pillai was born in Southern District of Tamil Nadu. He was a Tamil Poet and Scholar. He was conferred the title of Kavimani at Tamil Sangam in 1940 at Chennai. A Stamp was issued in his honour on 21 Oct 2005.
Dante Alighieri– Stamps of Kyrgyzstan Express Post 2015
Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) was a great Italian Poet ,theologian,politician and one of the founders of Italian Literary Language .His Divine Comedy is considered as a synthesis of European Medieval Culture .Dante is also called “The Father of the Italian Language ”
Kyrgyzstan Express Post issued a stamp on 02 Sep 2015 to celebrate 750th Birth Anniversary of Dante Alighieri.
450th Birth Anniversary of William Shakespeare -Stamps of Jersey 2014
William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an English Poet,Playwright & Actor widely regarded as the greatest writer in English language and World’s eminent dramatist.He is often called as England’s national poet and the ” Bard of Avon”.
Jersey issued a Miniature sheet on 450th Birth Anniversary of William Shakespeare on 23 Apr 2014. A FDC with miniature sheet is listed.
Serenade by Norman Rockwell – Stamps of Cook Islands -1982
Norman Percevel Rockwell (03 Feb 1894 – 8 Nov 1978) was an American Painter, author and illustrator. His works graced the covers of Saturday Evening Post magazine for 47 Years. His work Serenade appeared in Saturday Evening Post Cover on 30 Aug 1924.It depicts a young man serenading his sweetheart on a split log bench. He was associated with Boy Scouts of America for 64 Years.
Serenade – In music Serenade is a musical composition and/or performance delivered in honor. A piece of music sung or played in open air typically by a man at night under the window of his beloved.
A stamp was issued by Cook Islands on Serenade 10 Sep 1982.
Ahmednagar Fort is located near the banks of Bhingar river near Ahmednagar Maharashtra. It was built by Malik Amed Shah -I in 1427. In 1596 Chand Bibi repulsed the initial attacks of Mughals but Akbar captured it in 1600 and Aurangzeb was the Viceroy in 1636 & 1650. Aurangzeb died at Ahmednagar Fort in 1707 and the Fort pased on to Nizams of Hyderabad from 1724 to 1759. Shivaji invaded Ahmednagar in 1657 & 1665.
The Marathas were occupants of Fort from 1759-1803.The Scindias imprisoned Nana Phadanvis, Peshwa diplomat in Ahmednagar Fort. In 1803 during the Second Anglo-Maratha War Arthur Wellesley defeated Maratha Forces and East India Company occupied the Fort and later the British.
The British rulers imprisoned Jawahar Lal Nehru, Abdul Kalam Azad and Sardar Patel during 1942 Quit India Movement. During this period Nehru penned down “Discovery Of India” in Ahmednagar Fort. Abdul Kalam Azad also compiled his “Ghubar-e-Khatir”(Sallies of Mind) -an acclaimed “Epistolary Essays” of Urdu Literature.
After Independence this Fort is being looked after by Indian Army ( Armoured Corps).
A Special cover was released on 30 Jan 2017 on Ahmednagar Fort at Pune.
Nicolaus Copernicus – 500th Birth Anniversary – Stamps of Poland.
Nicolaus Copernicus ( 19 Feb 1473 -24 May 1543) was a Renaissance era Mathematician and Astronomer who formulated a model of Universe that placed the Sun (Heliocentric Model)rather than earth at centre of Universe ,independently of Aristarchus of Samos who had formulated such a model eighteen centuries earlier.
The Publication of his Book On the Revolutions of Celestial Spheres just before his death in 1543 was a major event in the history of Science trigering Copernican Revolution .
Copernicus was born and died in Royal Prussia part of Kingdom of Poland. A Polyglot and polymath he obtained a Doctorate in Canon Law and was also a Classics Scholar,Physician ,Translator ,Governor, Diplomat ,Economist & Poet.In 1517 he derived quantity theory of money -a key concept in Economics- and in 1519 he formulated an economic Principle that later came to be called Gresham’s Law.
Poland issued a set of three stamps on 26 Jun 1969 to mark his 500th Birth Anniversary. The stamps feature paintings on him .
