Golf Stamps -Ryder Cup Tournament 2006-Stamps of Ireland

Ryder Cup is a Biennial Men’s Golf Competition between teams from Europe and USA. The competition is held every two years with venues alternating between courses in USA and Europe.

The 2006 edition was played in Ireland at Palmer Course of the K Club in Straffan,County Kildare West of Dublin. This was the first time the event was held in Ireland. The 36th Ryder Cup (2006) was played from 22-24 Sep 2006. Europe won the event.

Ireland issued a beautiful set of stamps to commemorate this edition of Ryder Cup. Two variants were issued ,the die cut variety size 25x30mm with print run 35,000 each are listed.

One of the World’s biggest sporting events the Australian Open Tennis celebrated its Centenary in 2005. The First Tournament known as Australasian Tennis Championships was played at Warehouseman’s Cricket Ground in Albert Park Melbourne. The Competition became Australian Open in 1969  and moved to Melbourne Park in Jan 1988.

Australia issued a set of two stamps on 11 Jan 2005 to mark the centenary of Australian Open (1905-2005). The stamps feature a Male and a Female player. A gutter Pair of the stamp on a Woman tennis player is listed.

The First day Cover with two stamps is also listed.The cover design shows the architectural drawings of Rod Laver arena Melbourne Park.

Solheim Cup Tournament 2011-Stamps of Ireland

Solheim  Cup is a Biennial Women’s Golf Competition between teams from Europe and USA. The competition is held every two years with venues alternating between courses in USA and Europe.It is named after Norwegian- American Golf club manufacturer Karsten Solheim.

The inaugural cup was held in 1990 and the event was held in even years till 2002 alternating years with Ryder Cup. Due to postponement of Ryder Cup in 2001 post Sep 11 attacks Solheim cup switched to odd years beginning 2003.

The 2011 edition was played in Ireland at Killeen Castle ,County Meath North  West of Dublin. This was the first hosting of Cup by Ireland. The 12th Solheim Cup (2011) was played from 23-25 Sep 2011. Europe won the event  15-13.

The Dunsany Championship Golf Course designed by Jack Nicklaus hosted the 2011 edition in Ireland.

Ireland issued a beautiful  stamp on 15 Sep 2011 to commemorate 2011 edition of Solheim Cup. Top International Women Golfers Suzann Pettersen (Europe) & Michelle Wie (USA) unveiled the stamp and feature on it.
