Massachusetts State Flag –  The Final flag was approved in 1971. The main features on the Flag are

  • The flag features the Coat of Arms in a background of White.
  • The shield features the Algonquian native American with a bow & arrow.
  • The arrow is pointed downwards signifying peace.
  • A white star with five points near figure’s head signifies Massachusetts as a USA state.
  • A blue-ribbon surrounds the shield with motto “Ense Petit Placidam, sub Libertate Quietem” (” By the Sword, we seek Peace, But Peace Only under Liberty”)
  • Above the shield is State Military crest – the bent arm holding Broadsword aloft

  • The flag bears Arms of  Calvert and Crossland Families
  • Calvert was the family name of Lords Baltimore who founded Maryland.
  • Their Colors of Gold and Black appear in the 1st and 4th quarter of the flag.
  • Crossland was family of Mother of George Calvert, First Lord Baltimore.
  • The red and white Crossland colours, with cross bottony, appear in 2nd and 3rd quarters of Flag

  • The center field represents Main’s natural richness – Pine Tree, a moose,  sea and the Sky.
  • Farmer represents agricultural roots and sailor represents strong ties to the Sea.
  • A banner below displays state name.
