The theme for 1991 EUROPA stamps was Discoveries. France issued two stamps on this theme. 49 Countries participated in the stamp issue programme and issued 85 stamps. New countries to issue stamps on EUROPA theme were Aland, Greenland, Estonia and Latvia.

2.80 Fr – Discovery of AIDS Virus. Nobel Prize awarded to  Dr Luc Montagnier at Pasteur Institute Paris for the discovery of AIDS virus.

3.70 Fr – Discovery of De Broglie Wave (1924). The theory about subatomic particles having wave properties was given by Louis De Broglie in 1924. De Broglie (1892-1987) was a French physicist best known for wave theory and quantum theory. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1929.

Discovery of AIDS Virus – Stamps of France 1994.

The AIDS virus was discovered in 1983 by different research groups who gave this virus different names. The groups under Dr Gallo, Dr Luc Montagnier at Pasteur Institute Paris and Dr Jay Levy at the University of San Francisco California identified the AIDS virus. Dr Luc Montagnier was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for 2008 for this discovery along with two other scientists.

France issued a stamp with label on Discovery of AIDS virus on 01 Dec 1994 on World Day to combat AIDS. The 2.80 Fr stamp with a label is listed. It was also part of EUROPA issue of 1994.
