Gautam Buddha’s Birthday is a holiday traditionally celebrated in East, South and South East Asia. It is based on Asian Lunisolar Calendars and is primarily celebrated in Baisakh month of Buddhist Calendar and Bikram Samvat of Hindu Calendar and that is why called Vesak. It also falls on full moon Uposotha day in 5th or 6th Lunar Month. It is also celebrated on the eighth day of the fourth month in the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The full moon is Purnima in Sanskrit and hence Buddha Purnima. It is celebrated in April, May or June based on Gregorian Calendar. In 2019 it is being celebrated on 19th May.

In 2013 Sri Lanka issued a set of four stamps and a miniature sheet to celebrate Vesak. The stamps feature incidents from the life of Young Prince Siddhartha (Gautam Buddha). He goes out of his Palace in a Chariot accompanied by his Charioteer Channa or Chandaka. These are referred to as Four sights which led Buddha to enlightenment.

SL Rupees 4.00 – Prince Siddhartha encountered an Old Man.

SL Rupees 5.00- Prince Siddhartha encountered a Diseased Man

SL Rupees 15.00- Prince Siddhartha encountered a decaying Corpse.

SL Rupees 50.00- Prince Siddharth encountered an Ascetic.

Sri Lanka Post issued a set of 10 stamps on 27 Sep 2011 to mark World Tourism Day. Different themes were featured on each of the stamps capturing the enchanting beauty of this Island nation.

Sri Lankan Rupees Five – Theme Heritage – Ruwanwelisaya Stupa – It is stupa a hemispherical structure containing relics sacred to Buddhists all over the World. It is located in Anuradhapura in Central Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan Rupees Five – Theme Heritage-Sigiriya Rock Fortress – It is UNESCO WorldHeritage Site. It is ancient rock fortress located near the town of Dambulla in Northern Matale district in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. It consists of Water Gardens, Frescos and archaeological remains. Rocks 200 metres high exist here

Sri Lanka issued a set of Six stamps on 2600th Sambuddhatva Jayanti Vesak Festival .The stamps feature teachings of Buddhism. The Five rupees stamp were issued on 29th April 2011. The teachings are

  • Buddhism is a Universal Doctrine
  • Let us practise Buddhist Principles
  • Let us take care of Parents and respect them
  • Let us help sick
  • Person who practises Buddhism illuminates the entire World
  • Let us build an antinarcotic society.

Vesak is celebratedas religious and cultural festival on the full moon day of lunar month of Veshaka.  It is the most prominent Buddhist festival in Sri Lanka.
