The American troops taking part in World War II landed at Willingdon Airfield (later Safdarjung airport) the only airport/airfield in Delhi at that time. There was no hospital or medical centre nearby and few barracks were converted and equipped with the latest equipment to make it a modern medical centre for American Troops.

After the War Americans handed it over to the Indian Government. It is today a 2,900-bed multi speciality hospital, one of the largest Government hospitals in the country.
