Maxim Card Portuguese India 1952- 400th Death Anniversary St Francisco Xavier.
St Francis Xavier or San Francisco Xavier or Xavier was born on 07 Apr 1506 in Navarre Spain and died on 03 Dec 1552 at Sancian Island China. He was canonized on 12 Mar 1622. In 1534 he pronounced vows as one of the first seven members of Society of Jesus or Jesuits under the leadership of St Ignatius of Loyola. St Xavier is instrumental in establishment of Christianity in India
He disembarked in Goa on 06 May 1542,the centre of Protuguese activity in East.He spent three years among the Paravas,the Pearl fishers in Goa on South eastern coast of India. The Portuguese were present in Goa , Daman & Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and called it as Estado da India. India liberated Dadra and Nagar Haveli from Portuguese in 1954 and Goa,Daman and Diu from Portuguese on 18 Dec 1961.
A set of three stamps were issued by Portuguese India in 1952 to mark 400th death Anniversary of St Xavier. Three maxim Cards issued are listed.The Five Portuguese Indian Tanga stamp features the Tomb of St Francis Xavier.
