Stamps on Buddhas of Bamiyan -Afghanistan 1985
Afghanistan issued a stamp on Buddhas of Bamiyan on 27 Sep 1985 on the occasion of 10th Anniversary of World Tourism Organisation. The Buddhas of Bamiyan were 6th Century monumental statues of Gautam Buddha carved into the side of a cliff in Bamiyan Valley in the Hazarajat region of Central Afghanistan 230 kms north west of Kabul at an elevation of 2,500 metres. The statues represented the classical blended style of Gandhara art. They were dynamited and destroyed in Mar 2001.These remnants of Buddha statues are included on 2008 World Monuments watch list of 100 most endangered sites by World Monuments Fund.
