Siege of Szigetvar- 450th Anniversary – Miniature Sheet Croatia 2016

The Siege of Szigetvar or Battle of  Szigeth was the siege of Fortress Szigetvar, Kingdom of Hungary that blocked Suleiman’s line of advance towards Vienna in 1566 AD. It was fought from 06 Aug 1566 to 08 Sep 1566 between the invading forces of Ottoman Army led by Sultan Suleiman and Forces of Habsburg Monarchy under the leadership of Nikola Subic Zrinski former Ban of Croatia. The Ottoman Turks forces won the battle but both the Commanders died during battle -Suleiman in his tent due to natural causes and Nikola on last day of Battle. This heavy loss though prevented the Ottoman advance towards Vienna till Battle of Vienna in 1683.

Croatia issued a miniature sheet on 05 Sept 2016 as a Joint issue with Hungary to mark the 450th Anniversary of Siege of SZigetvar.One of stamp 6.50k features Nikola SubicZrinski and another stamp features Coat of Arms of the town of  Siget (4.50 k)
