Meenakshi temple also referred to as Meenakshi Amman or Meenakshi-Sundareshwara Temple is a historic Hindu temple located on the southern bank of Vaigai river in the temple city of Madurai in Tamil Nadu. It is dedicated to Meenakshi, a form of Parvati, and her consort Sundareshwar, a form of Shiva. The temple finds a mention in Sangam Literature of 6th Century AD. Lord Vishnu also finds mention in many narratives and hence temple and Madurai is sometimes as “Southern Mathura” for followers of Shaivism tradition.
