90th Inter-Parliamentary Conference Canberra -Stamps of Australia 1993
The Inter-Parliamentary Union was established by Frederic Passy (France) and William Randall Cremer (UnitedKingdom) in 1889. It was the first permanent forum for Political Multilateral negotiations. The national Parliaments of 178 countries are members of IPU. The IPU has Permanent observer status at the UN General Assembly.
The 90th Inter-Parliamentary Conference was held in Canberra in 1993. Australia Post issued a set of two se-tenant stamps to mark this event. Two 45 cents stamps were issued. One stamp features the Globe and the second stamp commemorates 50th Anniversary of Women in Federal Parliament of Australia.
The Women Parliamentarians featured on the stamp are Dame Enid Lyons, MP and Senator Dorothy Tangney.
Dame Dorothy Margaret Tangney DBE (1907-1985) was first Woman Member of Australian Senate. She belonged to the Australian Labour Party.
Dame Enid Muriel Lyons AD, GBE (1897-1981) was the First Woman elected to the Australian House of Representatives and the first woman to serve in Federal Cabinet. Prior to her own career, she was best known as the wife of Joseph Lyons who was Prime Minister of Australia and Premier of Tasmania.
