Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara or Kelaniya Temple is a famous Buddhist temple in Kelaniya Sri Lanka about seven miles from Colombo. This temple is believed to have close relations to Sri Lankan politics. Its history dates back to 500 BC. Its land was confiscated during the Portuguese rule but expanded during Dutch rule.It also relates to Buddha’s visit to Sri Lanka.
This temple is very famous for reclining Buddha paintings by native artist Solias Mendis which depict important events in the life of Buddha.
Sri Lanka issued a Rupee 1.00 postcard on Kelaniya Rajamaha Vihara paintings in 1998.
