Food from the Veld -Stamps of Venda  -1987.

Venda issued a set of four stamps on Food from the Veld on 02 Oct 1987. These were edible wild plants of Southern Africa. A First Day Cover with stamps is listed.

16c -Grewia occidentalis – Crossberry. Found in South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. It is used as a decorative plant and berries are edible, fermented with beer, used with goats milk to make berry yoghurt

30c- Phoenix reclinata – Wild date Palm or Senegal Date Palm. The fruit is eaten, the sap is tapped to make tap wine, roots are used to make dye, also produce edible gum, leaves have multiple uses to make carpets, baskets etc

40c – Halleria lucida- Tree fuchsia – Ornamental tree with uses in traditional Arfican medicine.

50c – Cucumis africanus – Vegetable,  Medicinal use, but is poisonous with cytotoxicity. Known as Wild Cucumber also.
