Wildlife Conservation –Pronghorn Antelope – Stamps of USA 1956.

The Pronghorn is a species of artiodactyl mammal indigenous to Western and Central North America. Though not an antelope it is colloquially known as American Antelope or prongbuck. Its closest relatives are Giraffe and Okapi. It is the fastest land mammal in Western Hemisphere reaching up to 35mph

Conservation – By the 1920’s the Population reduced to 13,000. The efforts of Boone and Crockett Club, it’s Chairman George Bird Grinnell, CA Sheldon paid dividends. Land was purchased and Charles Alexander Sheldon antelope refuge in Northern Nevada was created by Grinnell and T Gilbert Pearson. President Hoover added another 549,000-acre tract in 1936 for Pronghorn recovery.

Today the Population is about 500,000 to 1,000,000. Maximum population in Wyoming and parts of Northern Colorado. Now listed in the least concern category of IUCN.

The United States Postal Service issued a 3 cents stamp on Whooping Crane on 22 Jun 1956 under the Wildlife Conservation series.
