Shyam Lal College was founded in 1964 by philanthropist-entrepreneur Padma Shri Shyam Lal Gupta, who was the chairman of the Shyam Lal Charitable Trust. The formal foundation stone was laid on 24 May 1964 by Zakir Hussain — at the time, Vice-President of India and Chancellor of University of Delhi.

It was ranked 43rd among all colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).

A Special Cover was released on 26 Sep 2025 to mark 60 Years of the College.
