A stamp was issued on 04 Mar 1972 to commemorate the opening of Hendrik Verwoerd Dam in 1971. It was named after the First Prime Minister of South Africa Hendrik Verwoerd. However, at end of apartheid, the name was changed to Gariep Damon 04 Oct 1996. Gariep is Khoekhoe for the river , the original name for Orange river.
This Dam is located on Orange river near the town of Norvalspont bordering the Free State & Eastern Cape Provinces. It is an arch-gravity dam with a height of 88m and length of 914m.
