The theme for EUROPA 2002 was Circus. 58 participating countries issued 93 stamps on this common theme. Gibraltar issued a set of four stamps on the theme of Circus. The stamps were issued on 04 Mar 2002 and featured famous Clowns.

2002 was also the year of Introduction of Common European currency EURO. Twelve European countries started using Euro from 01 Jan 2002.

The Clowns featured on stamps are

30p – Mr Joseph Grimaldi (1778-1831)- English actor, clown & dancer, who became the most Popular entertainer of the Regency era.

40p – Karl Adrien Wettach “Grock” (1880-1959) Swiss Clown, composer and musician. Called “The King of Clowns” and “The Greatest of Europe’s Clowns”.Grock was once the most highly paid entertainer in the World.

42 p – Nikolai Polakovs, OBE (1900-1974).He was a Latvian who was the creator of Coco the Clown, the most famous clown in the UK.

54 p – Hubert Jean Charles Cairoli (1910-1980)- Italian -English clown, impressionist and musician.

2002 was also the year of Introduction of Common European currency EURO. Twelve European countries started using Euro from 01 Jan 2002.

Best EUROPA Stamp of 2002 – This stamp was adjudged the Best EUROPA Stamp of 2002 by delegates of PostEurop.It portrays an image of a clown captured on film by Gino Theuma. Incidentally, the logo of EUROPA used by Malta is incorrect -the left leg of R resting on U.
