Clock Towers on Stamps of Malaysia – 2007
The Clock Towers immediately remind us London’s Big Ben and Russia’s Spasskaya Tower at Kremlin. Similarly Malaysian Clock Towers have a history behind them.
Malaysia issued a set of three stamps on Clock towers on 06 Jun 2007. The Three towers are
30 Sen – The Birch Memorial Clock Tower ,Ipoh, Perak -This Tower was built in 1909 in memory of J W W Birch ,The First Resident of British Colonial Administration in Perak. This was also associated with first uprising of Malaysian Nationalism.
50 Sen – The Atkinson Tower, Kota Kinabalu,Sabah – It was completed in 1905 and built in memory of First resident of Sabah – Francis George Atkinson.It is one of the oldest buildings in Kota Kinabalu. It originally also served as a lighthouse giving positional information to vessels navigating through the port of Jesselton the old name of Kota Kinabalu.
RM 1 -The Big Clock Tower ,Alor Setar,Kedah – This Clock tower was built in 1912 and bears distinctive Moorish influences reflecting a blend of Hindu and Islamic Motifs. It is a landmark of town of Alor Setar .
