Golf & Philately – Stamps on Centenary of Royal Jersey Golf Club -1978
Jersey issued a set of Four stamps to Commemorate the Centenary of Royal Jersey Golf Club (1878-1978). It was the First golf Course to be established on the Island along the green coastlands of Royal Bay of Grouville under the centuries old ramparts of Mont Orgueil Castle. It also features one of most Famous Golfers of Jersey & World – Harry Vardon.
The Designs on Four stamps are
6p- Sows a Map of the complete Royal Jersey Course and a classic statuette of Harry Vardon.
8p – Depicts the grip and swing which Vardon perfected in an unusual combination of pictorial & kinetic design , a balanced harmony of motion.
11p- Symbolic of the close cropped magic of green with a demonstration of Vardon’s grip & stance.
13p- Reflects Vardon’s stature in golfing history, showing British and USA Open Golf Trophies -the former he won on six occasions -and one of his books “The Complete Golfer” set against a meticulously printed summary of his life.
First Day Cover – The second hole of the Royal Jersey course sets off the Club’s official badge ,embodying the three Leopards of Jersey and of the Royal arms of England.
