Native Musical Instruments of Papua New Guinea – Stamps of 1979
Papua New Guinea issued a set of Four stamps on Native Musical Instruments on 24 Jan 1979. The four instruments featured on the stamps are
7t – Ocarina- This instrument from Chimbu province is made of clay in the shape of an egg.On top are three holes -the centre hole is mouth piece and two flanking holes are stopped by fingers to form notes.
20t – Musical Bow – Used in Island of New Britain.It is made of Palm strip with a string of vine.held iside the mouth which acts like a resonance chamber to produce music.
28t – Launut -It from New Ireland region,made of block of wood with different sized holes carved over it. The player moves his hands on this using a sap applied on his hands and sounds of birds & animals are generated by instrument.
35t – Nose Flute- This is used by Tungak people of New Hanover region. Also known as “Kuikui Isung”. It is open from top with small hole below. The left hand and nostrils are used to play this.
