Special Covers on Madras Day- 377th Madras Day – 2016
Madras Day – The Founding day of Madras is considered as 22 Aug 1639.It was on this day that a piece of land (where Fort St George stands today) was transacted by East India Company. The deal took place between Francis Day, his ‘dubash” Beri Thimmappa and their superior Andrew Cogan with the local Nayak rulers.
In 2005 three people – S Muthiah ,Sashi Nair and Vincent D’Souza joined together to celebrate 22 Aug every year as Madras Day . Three others joined this idea later and now it is celebrated as Madras Week.
Special Covers on Madras Day – A Special Cover was released on 22 Aug 2016 to celebrate 377th Madras Day.
The theme for 2016 was The First Madras Exchange Lighthouse.The Covers bear cancellation of First Madras Exchange Lighthouse at Fort St George. The octagonal cancellation depicts the octagonal shape of Lighthouse.
First Madras Exchange Lighthouse was built in 1796,built above the present day Fort Museum. It was octagonal in shape built of wooden frame work and and wooden plank covering.It had twelve oil wicks as shown on back of cover.The three rear sides of glass windows were made opaque so No light is seen on land side.
