Wildlife Conservation – Whooping Crane – Stamps of USA 1957.

Whooping Crane and Sandhill Crane are the only two species of Cranes found in North America. Whooping Crane is named so for its whooping sound. It is the tallest North American bird and an endangered species.

By 1941 only about 21Whooping cranes were left in wild and two in captivity due to unregulated hunting and habitat changes.

Conservation – The Whooping Crane was declared endangered in 1967. The efforts of  Robert Porter Allen, Patuxent Wildlife research centre Maryland, George W Archibald, International Crane Foundation in Baraboo, Wisconsin the population of  Whooping cranes now stands at 800+

Canadian Wildlife Service counted 266 birds at Wood Buffalo National Park Alberta Canada, US Fish and Wildlife service counted 505 Whooping Cranes arriving at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. 177 Cranes in flocks and around161 in Captivity puts the figure at 800+.

The UnitedStates Postal Service issued a 3 cents stamp on Whooping Crane on 22 Nov 1957 under the Wildlife Conservation series.
