Stamps on Carl Gotthard Langhans -Germany 2007.
Germany has issued a stamp on 275th Birth Anniversary of Carl Gotthard Langhans on 27 Dec 2007. Carl Gotthard Langhans ( 15 Dec 1732 -01 Oct 1808 ) was a Prussian master builder and Royal architect. Churches, Palaces, Grand Houses, Interiors, theatres, City Gates etc in Berlin, Postdam, Silesia (Poland) designed by him are examples of Neoclassical architecture in Germany.
His best-known work is Bradenburg Gate in Berlin which symbolises today’s Germany and Germany Unification of 1989/90. Brandenburg Gate features on German Coins and Currency also.
This gate was built on orders of Prussian King Frederick William II between 1788 and 1791 and designed by Carl Gotthard. the gate consists of twelve Doric columns, six on each side, forming five passageways. Atop the gate is a Quadriga, a chariot drawn by four horses and Goddess of Victory Victoria with Prussian eagle and Iron cross on her lance with a wreath of oak leaves. It survived the WW II but was badly damaged and then restored.It was closed from 1961 when the Berlin wall was built and reopened on 22 Dec 1989 when Helmut Kohl walked across to be greeted by Hans Modrow.
The Gate has been host to many rallies and talks and events. US Presidents from John F Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and Barrack Obama have addressed rallies here. The German National Football team held a Victory rally here to celebrate its victory in 2014 FIFA World Cup. It is also the usual finish line to Berlin Marathon.
