Field Marshal K M Cariappa – Coorg – Medikeri

The 4th Battalion Brigade of Guards was raised on 15 Sep 1798 at Sasseram , Bihar. In 1922 it became Ist Battalion (Queen Victoria’s Own Light Infantry ) (QVOLI) 7th Rajput Regiment.

Field Marshal K M Cariappa, OBE (1900-1993). He received King’s Commission in 1919 and served in Waziristan with 1/7 Rajput from 1922 -1925. 1/7 Rajput is now known as 4 Guards (1Rajput). The Battalion celebrated its 222nd Raising Day on 15 Sep 2020.

A Rupees Two stamp was issued on 15 Jan 1995 (Army Day) on Field Marshal K M Cariappa. It was on 15 Jan 1949 that he became the First Indian Commander -in -Chief of Indian Army.

Field Marshal K M Cariappa, OBE (1900-1993) was born on 28 Jan 1900 at Sanivara Santhai (Coorg) and recieved his formal education at the Central high School of Virajpet and Medikeri (Coorg).
