STAMPS ON INFANTRY REGIMENTS (Part III) – INFANTRY DAY 2020.
It on 27 Oct 1947 when Lt Col DR Rai commanding 1 SIKH, landed at Srinagar airfield at 0830 hours and thereon held successive positions between Baramulla and Srinagar. this gave the Indian army those crucial golden hours to build up its strength which would finally evict the raiders out of the valley. Lt Col DR Rai and 16 of his brave soldier laid down their lives in saving Kashmir. Lt Col Dewan Ranjit Rai was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra (Posthumous) . Col Rai was born on 06 Feb 1913, Studied in #Bishop Cotton School Shimla was commissioned from #Indian Military Academy in 1935 with the Ist Course IMA. After Commissioning he was attached to King’s Shropshire Light Infantry Regiment stationed in India. He was Commanding the Ist Battalion in Sikh Regiment at Gurgaon when it was airlifted in Dakota from Gurgaon to Srinagar for these Operations. This aircraft were flown by Biju Patnaik (later Chief Minister of Odisha) and he handed over the OP Order to Captain S K Sinha later Vice Chief of Indian Army and Governor of J & K.
Col Harwant Singh , MC (then a Major and Delta Coy Commander) of 1 Sikh took over as Commanding Officer after Col Rai’s Martyrdom and held on to raiders at Pattan for more than 48 hours which saved Srinagar.
These were the first Infantry men who gave their supreme sacrifice in Defence of India. The Indian Army Celebrates this day as Infantry Day in honour of these Gallant Soldiers.
