Hungary Stamp on Beethoven – 2020
Ludwig von Beethoven (17 Sep 1770- 26 Mar 1827) was a German composer and Pianist with Flemish roots .He was born in Bonn and died in Vienna. He remains one of the most recognized and influential composers. His best known compositions include 9 Symphonies,5 Piano Concertos, 1 Violin Concerto, 32 Piano Sonatas, 16 string quartets, a mass the Missa solemnis and an Opera Fidelio. He worked with Neefe as assistant Court organist in Bonn between 1783 to 1785 . In 1786 he moved to Vienna . Although he is officially given an established position among the trio of composers of Viennese Classicism, which also includes Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, as the youngest among the three, he is undoubtedly also one of the originators of Romantic music.
The stamp uses a reproduction of part of a painting showing Beethoven while composing the Missa Solemnis. The Missa Solemnis in D major , op.123, is a solemn mass composed by Beethoven in between 1819-1823 and is considered as one of his supreme achievements. In the background an extract of one of his manuscripts can be seen. An allegorical portrait of Beethoven appears on the first day cover.
