Lumbini Peace Marathon -Nepal 2020

Lumbini Peace Marathon, is a unique marathon which combines spirituality, culture and adventure sports in the place of Lord Buddhas birth. The marathon highlights the prime locations in Buddha journey to Enlightenment.

Lumbini was the birthplace of Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism. It is a marathon in and around Buddha’s hometown, highlighting important Buddhist sites such as Kapilvastu Tilaurakot, Kudan, Sagrahawa, Ramgram, Devdaha and Mayadevi Temple. The race ends in Lumbini.

Located along the southwest border near India, Lumbini and its greater region is of considerable religious and historic significance. It’s an extremely popular destination for those interested in Buddhism and the Enlightened One. Since this trip is shorter in length and without the extreme altitudes of our other events, it’s of particular appeal to those looking to integrate a marathon into their vacation to the area.

Race History

Fascinated and impressed by the success of Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon 2011, His Excellency Maris Sangiampongsa, the honorable Ambassador of Thailand to Nepal who graced the event as the Chief Guest, proposed that a marathon with a Buddhist theme be launched in 2012 to celebrate Lumbini of Nepal, the birth place of Lord Buddha, that connects all important steps of Buddha’s life.

A thematic Spiritual Marathon like this Lumbini Peace Marathon following the footsteps of Lord Buddha to his birthplace in Lumbini & Tilarurakot Palace of his hometown Kapilvastu will give participants a chance to experience a bit of spiritual enlightenment that a traditional athletic marathon lacks.

It will be a fitting event for peace loving people around the globe to visit Lumbini and take part in this Buddha Peace Marathon to run for Lumbini, run for Buddha and spread the message of World Peace.

A 20 Rupees stamp was issued by Nepal in 2020 to mark this unique marathon
