The First World Lithuanian Sports Games then called Lithuanian National Olympics was organised in Kaunas then provisional capital of Lithuania. the second edition could not be held due to WW II.
In 1978 to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Independence of Lithuania and 40th Anniversary of National Olympics the Ist World Lithuanian Sports Games took place in Toronto Canada. The aim was to get all Lithuanian emigrants together and celebrate national identity with sports.
In 1983 the second event was held at Chicago USA and coincided with World Lithuanian Community Congress and Song Festival . It was organised by Mr Valdas Adamkus, Lithuanian settled in Chicago.
In 1988 the event was organised and held at Adelaide,Australia.
In 1991 the fourth Games were organised in Kaunas. Mr Valdas Adamkus was leading the US Lithuanian contingent to the games.
Valdas Adamkus was born in Kaunas Lithuania on 3rd Nov 1926 His father was the first head of Air Force School. His family left Lithuania during the WW II andSoviet Occupation in 1944. He studied at University of Munich before emigrating to USA in 1949. He served in US Army in 1950’s,was a track and field athlete and set a 100m national record. Graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology as a Civil engineer and there after became a leader for Lithuanian rights. He joined US Environmental Protection agency (EPA) in 1970 and retired in 1997.
He moved back to Lithuania after retirement and joined active politics to win two Presidential elections and was President of Lithuania twice 1998-2003 and 2004-2009.
10th Games – Mr Valdas Adamkus was an Honorary Guest at the opening of 10th World Lithuanian Sports Games in 2017. 4000 participants from 26 countries came -First,Second,third generation – to their homeland to compete in 19 different sports.
A Set of two stamps was issued by Lithuania on 27 Jul 1991 to commemorate the 4th World Lithuanian Sports Games.
