World War I and Philately -The 49th (Sault Ste Marie) Field Artillery Regiment ,RCA – Pre- Stamped Envelope
The 49th (Sault Ste Marie) Field Artillery Regiment, RCA, began as the 51st Regiment in 1913 and was renamed the 51st (Soo Rifles) in Feb 1914. It gave Guard duty at Sault Ste Marie Canal during First World war, many members of Soo Rifles volunteered with Canadian Forces overseas earning the Regiment Six battle Honors.
During the Second World War, many members of the then Sault Ste Marie and Sudbury Regiment transferred to 1st Canadian Division for service in Europe.
The Regiment got its present name on 10 Dec 1962. A pre-stamped envelope was issued 26 May 2013 to mark its Centenary and to mark 26 May as Artillery Day as celebrated by Royal Canadian Artillery. The cover and stamp design show Artillery Guns.
