Traditional Indigo Printed Dirndi -Stamps of Austria 2020.
Austria issues stamps on the theme Traditional Costumes every year. The beautiful region of WachaU on the banks of Danube is the theme for 2020. The highly traditional everyday use costume for Women Indigo Printed Dirndi features on the 85 euro cent stamp issued on 03 Apr 2020.
The dark blue Dirndi is made from cotton and after using traditional dyeing of Indigo printing a delicate floral pattern on blue background is created. The bodice with its characteristic bib is tightly fitted to the two curved seams in the back panel. A dark-blue ruched cotton trim, the so-called “Froschgoscherl”, decorates the neckline and the bib. The monochrome apron is slightly darker than the dress. A white blouse with gathered sleeves and white stockings round off the costume. The costume for special occasions, which is made of silk and brocade, the ladies wear with the Wachauer Goldhauben, golden bonnets which are painstakingly crafted by hand. This costume traces its origins to the Biedermeier period and has barely changed since.
WachaU is UNESCO World Heritage region primarily associated with apricots and wine making. The traditional Men’s costume of the region is kalmuck jacket and knee breeches. The boatmen and rafters make their jackets out of the robust cotton material known as Kalmuck and vintners use the same material for their daily wear. The Wachauer hat is decorated with European feather grass, a rare variety of grass.
