Stamps India 2026 – Birth Centenary Satish Gujral

India Post has issued a ₹5 commemorative postage stamp honouring the birth centenary of Satish Gujral, one of India’s most distinguished multidisciplinary artists. The stamp was released on 3 August 2026 at Bikaner House, New Delhi, by Union Minister for Communications.

The Stamp Design

The stamp features a striking portrait of Satish Gujral seated with a paintbrush in his hand. The image is based on a 2010 self-portrait, one of only four self-portraits known to have been painted by Gujral during his seven-decade career.

An interesting artistic feature is the contrast between the black-and-white rendering of Gujral’s face and arms and the richly coloured background. Purple and blue tones create a distinctive visual composition inspired by his artistic vocabulary.

The stamp was designed by Anuj Kumar, based on a proposal by Raseel Gujral Ansal, Satish Gujral’s daughter.

He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan for his contribution to art and culture.

Satish Gujral and Indian Philately

An especially important aspect for stamp collectors is that Satish Gujral himself had a connection with Indian postage-stamp design.

In 1996, he designed the commemorative stamp and First Day Cover marking the 125th anniversary of Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL).

For the VSNL issue, Gujral used a traditional spiral form as a symbol of universal communication systems. The stamp was a ₹5 issue (500 paise), printed by India Security Press, Nashik

e was also associated with the Financial Inclusion commemorative stamp, issued shortly before his death. The Department of Posts specifically recalled his contribution to these stamp designs during the 2026 centenary ceremony.

First Day Cover

A First Day Cover (FDC) was issued along with the commemorative stamp. The FDC is particularly interesting because it is also based on one of Satish Gujral’s artworks.

Satish Gujral was an Alumni of Mayo School of Arts , Lahore, Sir JJ School of Art , Mumbai and Palacio De Bellas, Mexico City
