Australian Open 2019 – Stamps on Australian Open Centenary 2005

The Australian Open 2019 will be played at Melbourne Park from 14 to 29 January 2019. This will be the 107th edition since 1905 and 51st in the Open era. The Australian Open was first played at Warehouseman’s Cricket Ground in 1905. This facility is now known as the Albert Reserve Tennis Centre.

In a calendar year, four major tennis tournaments are played around the World. These are known as Grand Slam tournaments and anybody winning all four of them in the same year is supposed to have won a Grand Slam. In a case in the same year a player also wins an Olympic Gold Medal then it is known as a Golden Grand Slam.

The Grand Slam format consists of Australian Open in Mid January, the French Open in May-June, Wimbledon in June-July and US Open in August-September. These tournaments are also known as Tennis Majors. Wimbledon the oldest was founded in 1877, followed by the US Open in 1881, the French Open in 1891 and the Australian in  1905. The Wimbledon was the only Major prior to 1924-25.

Wimbledon is played on Grass, French Open on Clay, US Open and The Australian Open are played on Hard Courts. Three courts with retractable roofs will be used during 2019, which shall provide relief from extreme heat conditions. The courts are Rod Laver, Margaret Court & Melbourne Arenas.

Australia Post issued a set of two stamps on 11 January 2005 to commemorate the Centenary of Australian Open. The Stamps feature Man and a Woman playing Tennis. A  First Day Cover with a postmark of Melbourne (Venue City ) was also released.

One of the World’s biggest sporting events the Australian Open Tennis celebrated its Centenary in 2005. The First Tournament known as Australasian Tennis Championships was played at Warehouseman’s Cricket Ground in Albert Park Melbourne. The Competition became Australian Open in 1969  and moved to Melbourne Park in Jan 1988.

Australia issued a set of two stamps on 11 Jan 2005 to mark the centenary of Australian Open (1905-2005). The stamps feature a Male and a Female player. A gutter Pair of the stamp on a Woman tennis player is listed.

The First day Cover with two stamps is also listed.The cover design shows the architectural drawings of Rod Laver arena Melbourne Park.

The 12th Asian Games were held in Jakarta – Indonesia from 24 Aug to 04 Sep 1962. A total of 1,460 Competitors from 12 Nations participated in 88 events in 13 Sports.

Afghanistan  released  a set of  stamps to commemorate winners of events at the 4th Asian Games. The Stamps feature Mohamad Ibrahim Kederi an Afghan wrestler who won a Gold medal at 4th Asian Games,Tennis Player, Shot Putter and Javelin Thrower.The stamps were issued on 02 Sep 1963.
